Peanut irrigation aims to ensure geocarpy, the process of fruit formation within the soil. It is essential to maintain soil moisture in the 7–10 cm layer, which is necessary for gynophore penetration and calcium uptake.

Successful peanut development requires between 500 and 720 mm of moisture throughout the growing season. Seedlings require sufficient moisture, as seeds absorb up to 50% of their mass in water during swelling, but the most critical period for irrigation is during flowering and pod set. Closer to harvest, after 105 days, water requirements decrease significantly.
Irrigation critically affects the process of geocarpy: gynophores require loose and moderately moist soil to successfully penetrate the ground. Excessive waterlogging is unacceptable, as it promotes disease development, pod rot, and creates risks of pathogen accumulation on developing pods. Using ridge planting helps to better control the water regime in the fruit formation zone.
