Vegetative propagation of roses by cuttings depends on the variety group and the physiological state of the shoots. The method is effective for groundcover, climbing, and miniature varieties, while hybrid tea groups show low ability for independent rooting.

The success of propagation is directly related to the developmental phase of the mother plant. The optimal material for softwood cuttings consists of shoots at the bud coloration stage, as they contain a high concentration of natural auxins. An important condition is to retain the leaves on the cuttings to support root growth, provided that mist irrigation systems are used to prevent desiccation.

Unlike many ornamental shrubs, own-root roses build their root systems more slowly during the first years of life and are more sensitive to external factors compared to grafted specimens. However, propagation by cuttings allows for the complete avoidance of wild rootstock suckers. Boron plays a specific role in the rooting process; its deficiency makes root formation impossible.
