Variety traits
Capsicum annuum L.
A trait defining the ability of a pepper plant to terminate main stem growth after the formation of a terminal flower cluster. It characterizes plant architecture, branching degree, and crop formation strategy.
In the reference 134 varieties crop Bell pepper, where this is mentioned in the description.
In determinate pepper varieties, main stem growth ceases naturally after the development of a specific number of nodes. Super-determinate forms represent a distinct group where growth stops very early after the setting of 6–12 flowers at the apex, which contributes to the formation of a compact canopy with short internodes.
Indeterminate pepper varieties have no limitation on main stem growth, which can reach two meters, while semi-determinate forms occupy an intermediate position with later growth termination. This trait is inherited quantitatively, and in crosses, F1 hybrids often exhibit intermediate characteristics or dominance of indeterminacy.
The growth type determines the crop's cultivation technology: determinate forms allow for high-density planting schemes of up to 20 plants per square meter and do not require complex pruning, making them optimal for open field conditions. Indeterminate varieties require lower planting density, mandatory pruning, and are preferred for prolonged fruiting in permanent greenhouses.
