Determinate growth in peas

Pisum sativum L.

A pea growth habit in which the apical meristem of the stem transforms into a terminal inflorescence after forming a predetermined number of generative nodes, thereby limiting plant height.

In the reference 46 varieties crop Pea, where this is mentioned in the description.

In pea breeding, two primary genetic models of determinacy are distinguished: the “Moscow type,” associated with a mutation of the DET gene, which produces a small number of reproductive nodes, and the “Samara type,” caused by a mutation of the deh gene and accompanied by premature apex necrosis.

The trait is assessed qualitatively by the presence of a terminal inflorescence and quantitatively by the number of reproductive nodes and stem height. Determinate forms exhibit increased lodging resistance and uniform ripening; however, due to their limited growth, they often require a 15–25% increase in seeding rate.
