Flower diameter

Flower diameter is a morphological trait of a variety used to assess ornamental quality, commercial value, and plant identification during variety testing.

Flower diameter is an important morphological indicator that characterizes the varietal traits of a plant and its aesthetic value. In the process of varietal identification, this trait is recorded in centimeters or millimeters using measuring rulers during the mass flowering phase, with measurements taken on several plants at different points of the plot to obtain reliable average data.

The value of this indicator is determined by the genetic potential of the variety, although its actual realization directly depends on external conditions, including light, temperature, humidity, and the level of mineral nutrition. In some crops, an inverse correlation is observed between the total number of flowers on an inflorescence and their size, which is linked to the effect of intraspecific competition for nutrients.

During variety trials, flower diameter parameters are evaluated in comparison with the generally accepted standard for a specific species, as there are no absolute quality criteria. Depending on the methodology, scoring scales may be used where flower size correlates with a gradation of ornamental value, and the values from the official description of the breeding achievement are attained only when optimal agricultural practices are followed.
