Spathe size is a strictly varietal trait, varying depending on the origin of the form. In common cultivars, the spathe width ranges from 3–7 cm with a length of about 15 cm, and large, symmetrical spathes are a decisive criterion for marketability in cut flower production.

Inflorescence formation depends directly on tuber quality, lighting conditions, and mineral nutrition.
