Zantedeschia Spreng.

The length and strength of the scape are decisive quality parameters for Zantedeschia cut flowers, influencing the grade and the plant's resistance to lodging.

The scape length is measured from the base emerging from the rhizome to the beginning of the spadix inflorescence. Values for this trait vary depending on the species, for example, between representatives of Z. aethiopica and mini-calla type cultivar groups, and are also highly dependent on nutritional regimes and the substrate.

Critical characteristics are the strength and uprightness of the scape, which provide support for the heavy spathe. Excessive growth or water regime disorders provoke physiological splitting of the scape at the base, which leads to its deformation and a decrease in market value.

When growing potted forms, growth regulators are used to control scape height, as length is directly related to plant compactness. Long and sturdy stems serve as a key quality indicator when evaluating cut flower products.
