Soft wheat is infested by the granary weevil (Sitophilus granarius L.) and the rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae L.). The infestation is cryptic: the female deposits an egg into a cavity gnawed into the grain, after which the larva develops inside the kernel, consuming the endosperm. Adult insects also damage the grain by boring holes into it.
The degree of wheat infestation depends on the physical and chemical properties of the grain. Varieties with a looser endosperm structure are infested more intensely than harder-grained forms. Genetic resistance to these pests is not distinguished in wheat breeding, as resistance is determined by the physical hardness of the grain rather than by specific immunity genes.
