Pests
Medicago sativa L.
A group of harmful insects of the Curculionidae family that infest alfalfa at all stages of ontogenesis. It includes leaf weevils (Hypera), nodule weevils (Sitona), root weevils (Otiorhynchus), and seed weevils (Tychius), which significantly reduce hay and seed yields.
In the reference 6 varieties crop Alfalfa, where this is mentioned in the description.
The alfalfa weevil (Hypera postica) damages buds, leaves, and stem tips, causing inflorescences to wither. Nodule weevils of the genus Sitona cause scalloped feeding on leaf margins by adults, while their larvae destroy nitrogen-fixing nodules, suppressing plant growth. The alfalfa root weevil (Otiorhynchus ligustici) penetrates the taproot, creating galleries and leading to the wilting of alfalfa.
Seed weevils of the genus Tychius, including T. medicaginis, damage the reproductive organs of the crop by developing inside buds, flowers, and pods. Infestation by seed weevils is often accompanied by the formation of galls, which has a critical impact on the seed productivity of alfalfa.
