Medicago sativa L.

Alfalfa lodging is an agronomic and biological trait characterized by the leaning or falling of stems, which impedes mechanical harvesting and reduces crop quality.

Alfalfa lodging resistance is assessed visually, taking into account the type (root or stem lodging), the distribution pattern across the field, and the stand's recovery capacity. Special attention is paid to crops under irrigation, where excess moisture triggers excessive vegetative growth.

Lodging leads to significant losses of seeds and green mass during harvest, impairs aeration within the stand, and promotes disease development and seed germination in the head. This trait is closely linked to varietal characteristics: hybrids derived from Medicago falcata show greater resistance than cultivars of Medicago sativa.

Agrotechnical factors influencing lodging include soil fertility and seeding density. Excessive fertilization and high stand density cause plant elongation; therefore, soils with moderate nutrient availability are recommended for seed production plots.
