Strawberry Phytophthora root rot

A fungal disease of strawberries caused by the oomycetes Phytophthora fragariae var. fragariae and Phytophthora cactorum, affecting the root system and aerial parts of the plant.

The primary pathogens of the disease are Phytophthora fragariae var. fragariae, which causes root rot, and Phytophthora cactorum, associated with crown rot of strawberry. A characteristic diagnostic symptom of root infection is the reddening of the stele in longitudinal section, with root tips dying off and taking on a 'rat-tail' appearance.

Aerial symptoms include stunting, yellowing or reddening of the leaves, as well as drying of buds and necrosis of the pistils. Depressed leathery spots may form on the berries. Plants often die during the flowering or fruiting phase, creating patches of infection in the plantings.

In strawberry breeding for resistance to Phytophthora root rot, the Rpf gene family plays a key role, among which the Rpf1 gene is the most significant. To identify genotypes with high resistance in the breeding process, marker-assisted screening using the R1A SCAR marker is employed.
