Fusarium Wilt of Cabbage

Brassica oleracea L. (Cabbage Group)

A fungal disease caused by the soil-borne pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans, leading to vascular infection and plant wilting. It is characterized by yellowing of foliage, unilateral deformation of the head, and the appearance of a brown ring on cross-sections of the stem and petioles.

The pathogen belongs to the class Hyphomycetes and persists in the soil as chlamydospores for many years. Two main races of the pathogen are identified: the widespread race 1 and the more aggressive race 2. Differential host cultivars, such as Golden Acre and Badger Inbred 16, are used to evaluate breeding material.

Symptoms appear on both seedlings and mature plants as loss of turgor and chlorotic yellowing of leaves, often occurring asymmetrically. A characteristic diagnostic feature is the brown discoloration of the vascular ring on a cross-section of the stem or leaf petiole. Severe infection leads to leaf drop and stunted head development.

Genetic resistance to the disease is denoted as Foc or Foc: 1. There are no absolutely resistant cultivars, as the effectiveness of cultivar protection depends on environmental conditions, particularly high soil temperatures, which can trigger disease development even in resistant material.
