Brassica oleracea L. (Cabbage Group)
Onion thrips (Thrips tabaci) is the primary pest of cabbage, damaging leaves and penetrating into the head. Infestation leads to a loss of marketability, reduced storage life, and secondary infection by pathogens.
In the reference 7 varieties crop Cabbage, where this is mentioned in the description.
The primary species causing economic damage to head cabbage is the onion thrips. The pest feeds via a piercing-sucking mechanism, resulting in the appearance of silvery or grey spots, necroses, characteristic "warty" growths, and black fecal spots on the leaves. When the insects penetrate into the head, rusty or brown spots form on the inner leaves, which necessitates heavy trimming of the produce before marketing.
Resistance to thrips in cabbage is a polygenic trait and is not linked to specific marker genes. Breeding focuses on morphological characteristics such as head density, sugar content, and the intensity of the waxy bloom on the leaves. In seed production, a classification based on the level of tolerance or intermediate resistance (IR) is adopted, as there are currently no varieties with absolute immunity to this pest.
