Head splitting — cabbage

Brassica oleracea L. (Cabbage Group)

A physiological disruption of head integrity in white cabbage caused by an imbalance between the growth of inner leaves and the elasticity of outer tissues during moisture fluctuations.

In the reference 17 varieties crop Cabbage, where this is mentioned in the description.

The splitting trait is a key criterion for evaluating varieties and hybrids during state variety testing. Resistance to this phenomenon is determined in the field visually using special scales and is expressed in points or as a percentage of damaged heads in a plot relative to the total number.

The process is triggered by sharp fluctuations in soil moisture, such as heavy rainfall following a period of drought, as well as by excessive nitrogen nutrition in the second half of the growing season. Low resistance of a variety leads to a loss of marketability, an increased risk of rot during storage, and the need for strict adherence to harvest schedules.

Highly resistant varieties are able to maintain the integrity of their heads even when left in the field past maturity or subjected to significant moisture fluctuations. Genetic predisposition to splitting is closely linked to head density and the morphological elasticity of its wrapper leaves.
