Open-field cultivation — head cabbage

Brassica oleracea L. (Cabbage Group)

Cabbage cultivation technology in field conditions, requiring strict adherence to crop rotation and the selection of varieties adapted to regional temperature regimes and planting methods.

In the reference 7 varieties crop Cabbage, where this is mentioned in the description.

When grown in open fields, head cabbage requires strict adherence to crop rotation to prevent clubroot, excluding the return of the crop to its previous location after other cruciferous vegetables. The technological cycle includes two planting methods: the transplant method, used in most zones, and the direct-seeding method, which produces a deeper root system and requires fertile, light-textured soils.

In open-field conditions, cabbage shows high sensitivity to temperatures above 25 degrees, which causes head cracking and tissue deformation; therefore, varieties must be selected based on their climatic adaptation to the region. Variety testing methodologies are thus focused on evaluating the commercial quality of the head itself rather than total biomass, with mandatory plant protection against crucifer flea beetles during the initial growth phases.
