The pathogen is the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. conglutinans, within which two main physiological races are distinguished, with race 2 possessing higher aggressiveness. Infection of the vessels by the fungus leads to the appearance of a characteristic light-brown or dark-brown ring on cross-sections of petioles and stems, caused by the blockage of the vascular system.
Symptoms manifest as unilateral chlorosis, loss of turgor, head deformation, and stunted growth at any stage of crop development. In breeding programs aimed at improving resistance in Chinese cabbage, marker-assisted studies of candidate genes such as Bra012688 and Bra012689, as well as the expression of defensins, play a key role.
