The concept of winter protection for Chinese cabbage does not imply overwintering the crop in open ground, as the plant is not a wintering species.

Chinese cabbage is not capable of overwintering under field conditions; therefore, there are no winter protection methods for ensuring the survival of the crop. Attempts to cover the heads for the winter in the ground lead to their spoilage due to rotting and physiological disorders.
In agronomic practice, temporary covers made of film or agricultural fleece are used exclusively to protect plants from late spring frosts during the growing season or to extend the season before harvest. Exceeding the cold tolerance threshold of -4 °C when using temporary protective measures causes the plants to bolt and lose their marketability.
