Fusarium Wilt of Watermelon

Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai

A fungal vascular disease caused by the specialized form Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum. It manifests as wilting, root collar damage, and specific browning of the xylem in stem cross-sections.

In the reference 347 varieties crop Watermelon, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causal agent of Fusarium wilt is the soil-borne pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum (Fon), which is adapted exclusively to watermelon. There are various races of this fungus that differ in virulence and are capable of overcoming cultivar resistance, making their identification critical for breeding programs.

The disease is vascular in nature and can lead to plant death at any stage of development. In seedlings, rotting of the hypocotyl is observed, whereas in mature plants, the primary symptoms are wilting of the vines, yellowing of the leaves, and characteristic browning of the vascular bundles in stem cross-sections.

Due to the limited genetic diversity of commercial cultivars and the instability of their resistance to new pathogen races, grafting watermelon onto Fusarium-resistant rootstocks, such as Lagenaria siceraria, is widely used in agricultural practice to combat the disease.
