Fusarium Wilt of Pea

Pisum sativum L.

A complex disease of peas manifesting as root rot and vascular wilt. The pathogen is predominantly Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. pisi, represented by four major races.

In the reference 300 varieties crop Pea, where this is mentioned in the description.

The disease is caused by fungi of the genus Fusarium, where the primary specialized pathogen is Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. pisi, supplemented by a complex of species, including Fusarium solani f. sp. pisi, Fusarium culmorum, and Fusarium avenaceum. Four key races are identified for the main pathogen: 1, 2, 5, and 6.

Symptoms include seed decay, browning of the root system, and tracheomycosis wilt, characterized by yellowing of the lower leaves and darkening of the stem vessels. A specific sign during the pod-filling stage is a water-soaked, purple, "scalded" appearance of the pods.

Genetic resistance to races 1, 5, and 6 is controlled by a single gene, while resistance to race 2 is polygenic in nature. In breeding, work is being conducted with resistance genes, such as Fw, to control the disease, although the widespread adoption of highly resistant varieties remains an ongoing challenge.
