The causative agents of the disease comprise a complex of about 19 fungal species, among which the most significant are Fusarium graminearum, F. culmorum, F. avenaceum, F. poae, F. sporotrichioides, and F. pseudograminearum. These pathogens differ in their geographical distribution and the specific profile of mycotoxins they produce.

Symptoms of spike infection appear during the grain-filling stage as premature whitening of individual spikelets and the development of a pink-orange mold under high humidity. The grain becomes shriveled, loses its luster and germination capacity, while infection of the root system and stems leads to necrosis and a reduction in straw strength.

Resistance of wheat to Fusarium head blight is a quantitative trait controlled by multiple loci. Key genetic resistance factors include the Fhb1 gene, which enhances general tolerance, and the Fhb7 gene, derived from tall wheatgrass (Thinopyrum elongatum), which provides mycotoxin neutralization.
