Powdery mildew of wheat

Triticum L.

A fungal disease caused by the obligate biotroph Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici, which affects all aerial plant organs and significantly reduces yield by destroying chlorophyll and inhibiting photosynthesis.

In the reference 11 varieties crop Wheat, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causative agent of the disease is a specialized form of the fungus Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici, which infects wheat exclusively. The infection manifests as a white web-like coating that eventually thickens into cotton-like patches, and by the end of the growing season, fruiting bodies—black cleistothecia—form on it. The pathogen localizes on leaf sheaths, stems, and glumes, causing a reduction in tillering, ear sterility, and grain shriveling.

Genetic resistance of wheat to the disease is controlled by specific Pm (Powdery mildew) genes, such as Pm1a, Pm2, Pm3a, Pm4a, Pm8, Pm21, and Pm34. Most of these loci provide race-specific, gene-for-gene resistance; however, the pathogen possesses a high capacity for rapid adaptation and the formation of virulent biotypes. For breeding, the pyramiding method is used, combining several resistance genes in one genotype to slow down the process of overcoming the variety's protection.
