Wheat lodging

A critical trait of wheat crop condition that causes yield losses of up to 60% and hinders mechanized harvesting. It is evaluated on a five-point scale, where varieties with a score higher than 4.0 are considered resistant.

To assess wheat resistance to lodging, a five-point scale is used, where 5 points correspond to fully resistant, upright crops, and 1 point to crops unsuitable for mechanical harvesting. Intermediate values record the ability of plants to straighten after lodging. Varieties that maintain an average score of more than 4.0 points over 3–5 years of testing are considered resistant.

In addition to visual assessment, morphological-anatomical methods are applied, including the analysis of plant height, diameter and strength of the lower internodes, as well as the content of lignin, silicon, and cellulose. Genetic resistance to lodging is achieved by using varieties with Rht semi-dwarfing genes.

Lodging negatively affects the physiological processes of wheat, reducing the intensity of photosynthesis and hindering full grain filling. This condition provokes the development of spike diseases and leads to significant quantitative and qualitative yield losses due to impaired operation of harvesting machinery.
