Variety traits
Gossypium hirsutum L.
The cotton maturity group is determined by the duration of the growing period from emergence to the opening of 50% of the bolls. This indicator is a critical factor limiting the feasibility of cultivating a variety depending on the heat resources of a region.
In the reference 126 varieties crop Upland cotton, where this is mentioned in the description.
To assess the cotton maturity group, the number of days from emergence to biological maturity, defined by the opening of half the bolls on the plant, is used. Early-maturing varieties have a growing period of 105–120 days, whereas mid-maturing varieties are characterized by a period of 125 to 140 days or more.
The choice of maturity group directly affects cultivation technology, as the formation of a large boll requires at least 60 days after flowering. A mismatch between the variety and climatic conditions leads to an extended growing season, reduced fiber quality, and the inability to perform full mechanized harvesting.
In modern breeding, the priority is the creation of intensive early-maturing varieties, including forms with the mutant "null-type" branching trait. These varieties allow for avoidance of unfavorable autumn conditions and pests, while maintaining an acceptable level of yield and fiber turnout.
