Cotton Maturity Groups

Gossypium L.

Classification of cotton varieties based on the duration of the growing season from emergence to boll opening, measured in days and the sum of active temperatures.

In the reference 90 varieties crop Cotton, where this is mentioned in the description.

Cotton maturity groups are defined by the time interval from full emergence to technical maturity. Early-maturing varieties ripen in 100–110 days with a sum of active temperatures of about 3000 °С, mid-maturing varieties require 130–135 days and 3400 °С, and late-maturing varieties require 150–170 days and 4000 °С.

The choice of maturity group is a determining factor when planning agricultural practices. At the northern limits of the cultivation area, preference is given to early-maturing varieties to prevent crop loss from autumn frosts, as well as to ensure timely harvesting before the onset of adverse weather conditions.
