Sorghum maturity group

The maturity group of sorghum is determined by the duration of the growing season from emergence to seed maturation and the requirement for the sum of active temperatures.

Sorghum classification based on the sum of active temperatures is divided into early-maturing (2000–2500 °C), mid-early (2500–3000 °C), mid-maturing (3000–3500 °C), and late-maturing (over 3500 °C) forms. In agricultural practice, a scale in days is also used, according to which early-maturing varieties ripen in 90–100 days, and mid-maturing ones in 95–120 days.

The choice of maturity group determines the cultivation strategy, as late-maturing varieties have a higher yield potential but require a long growing season. At the same time, early-maturing hybrids have a lower leaf area index and require higher seeding rates compared to late-maturing varieties.
