Classification of highbush blueberry varieties based on the calendar timing of biological fruit maturity. Determined by visual characteristics, texture, and sugar accumulation (at least 15% Brix).

Blueberry fruit ripeness is determined by a combination of traits: full coloration of the skin to dark blue, the presence of an intense waxy bloom, a change in fruit texture, and sugar accumulation to a level of at least 15% Brix. For an objective assessment of the degree of maturity, an instrumental method of measuring the chlorophyll absorbance index using a DA-meter can additionally be applied.
Varieties are subdivided into early, mid, and late groups, which determine the calendar harvest time from the end of June through September. Since blueberries are characterized by staggered fruit ripening over a period of 3–5 weeks, harvesting a single variety usually requires 2 to 4 picking passes.
