Beta vulgaris Sugar Beet Group

A key productivity factor for sugar beets that determines the yield and technological quality of root crops. The optimal harvest density is 80–100 thousand plants per hectare.

To establish an optimal plant population with 45 cm row spacing, the recommended interval between plants in the row is 18–20 cm, which corresponds to 5–6 plants per linear meter. In regions with sufficient moisture, the upper limit of plant density should be maintained, while in moisture-deficient conditions, it should be reduced. On highly fertile soils, the density may be reduced to 75 thousand plants per hectare, as the individual weight of the root crops compensates for the lower sowing density.

Uniformity of plant distribution across the feeding area is critically important, as gaps or overcrowding reduce resource use efficiency and marketable yield. Exceeding the optimal density leads to smaller root sizes, while sparse stands result in a loss of total sugar yield per hectare, as sugar beets are extremely sensitive to uneven development. Calculating the seeding rate requires accounting for field emergence and natural plant mortality, which typically ranges from 10–15% during the growing season.
