The ability of cucumber to maintain growth and fruit production at temperatures of +10…+12°C and to withstand short-term cold spells. The crop lacks frost resistance, and temperatures below 0°C cause plant death due to tissue rupture.

Cucumber is a thermophilic crop with a distinct physiological limit of resistance to low temperatures. Irreversible tissue damage occurs if the temperature drops to +8°C for more than two days or to +5°C within 24 hours. In breeding, cold tolerance is determined not by survival at sub-zero values, but by the ability to maintain vegetation and fruit setting under conditions of temperature stress.
The assessment of cold tolerance in variety trials is carried out by comparing biometric indicators of plant development in climatic chambers after cold exposure. For agronomic practice, this trait is important because cold-tolerant hybrids are less prone to ovary drop during nighttime temperature dips, which allows for the mitigation of risks during periods of unstable climate in open fields and plastic greenhouses.
