The ability of soybean seeds to germinate and emerge under low-temperature stress, which is a determining factor for early sowing dates and the expansion of the crop's cultivation area.

To evaluate the cold tolerance of soybean, a cold germination test is performed at temperatures of 4–10 °C, assessing germination energy and seedling vigor. Breeding research also employs laboratory stress modeling with the analysis of biochemical markers, such as the accumulation of proline, soluble sugars, and peroxidase activity, as well as genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to identify QTLs responsible for resistance.
The trait is characterized by a cold tolerance index, calculated as the ratio of growth parameters between stressed and control plants. Varieties capable of maintaining germination at 4 °C are considered promising for early sowing. High cold tolerance is critical for preventing poor stand establishment and reducing the risk of seedling infection by soil-borne pathogens during a cool spring.
