Solanum lycopersicum L.
Tomato cold tolerance is the ability of the crop to continue vegetation at temperatures above zero, which does not provide protection against frost damage. The trait is evaluated at the gametic and sporophytic levels by analyzing germination, root growth rate, and physiological responses during coo…
In the reference 9 varieties crop Tomato, where this is mentioned in the description.
For tomato, the critical threshold is temperatures below +10…+12 °C, at which root system inhibition, decreased nutrient uptake rates, and increased susceptibility to pathogens occur. Since the tomato is a tropical plant, the concept of cold tolerance is limited to the ability to maintain metabolic activity during short-term cooling within the positive range.
In breeding practice, cold tolerance is evaluated using methods of pollen viability analysis and pollen tube growth rate in vitro, as well as by studying seed germination and primary root growth rate at low temperatures. Physiological status is assessed through the dynamics of chlorophyll fluorescence induction, cell plasmolysis, and biochemical analysis of membrane composition, including the concentration of glycosylated sterols.
