A serious pest affecting greenhouse and open-field tomato crops, primarily represented by Tetranychus urticae and Tetranychus evansi species. It feeds on leaf cell contents, causing chlorosis, tissue deformation, and a significant reduction in yield.

On tomato crops, the primary species are the two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae and the specialized solanaceous pest, the tomato red spider mite Tetranychus evansi. The presence of the carmine spider mite is also recorded. For these pests, there is no race-based classification system applicable to tomato breeding; however, populations are characterized by a high capacity to develop resistance to acaricides.
Damage manifests as small light or yellowish spots on the underside of leaves, which subsequently merge into extensive necrotic patches. Leaves acquire a pale or bronzed appearance, curl, and drop prematurely. With high pest density, plants become covered in fine webbing, leading to a sharp decrease in photosynthesis intensity. Official commercial tomato varieties do not have genetically fixed resistance to this pest labeled with standard resistance codes.
