Representatives of the Tetranychidae family occur on grapevines, with the most common being the twospotted spider mite, the Atlantic spider mite, and the European red mite. These pests prefer hot and dry climatic conditions and differ from gall mites in the nature of the damage caused and the presence of webbing on the undersides of leaves.

The initial signs of infestation appear as small light spots, which eventually develop into a mottled appearance. In white grape varieties, yellowing or bronzing of the leaves is observed, while in dark varieties, the tissues acquire reddish hues. During mass outbreaks of the pest, vine suppression, disruption of transpiration, and delayed berry ripening are noted.

Currently, no specialized resistance genes to spider mites have been identified in the Vitis genus. The degree of infestation in cultivars is associated with the biochemical characteristics of the leaf blade, particularly its pubescence, as breeding for immunity to this pest is hindered by the lack of distinct differentiation in varietal responses.
