Spider Mite of Cucumber

The twospotted spider mite is a dangerous pest of cucumber that causes leaf tissue necrosis through sap extraction. Infestation manifests as light-colored specks, leaf mottling, and the formation of webbing.

On cucumber, the species Tetranychus urticae Koch causes damage by infesting the undersides of leaves. Initial symptoms appear as small light-colored puncture marks, which resemble pinpricks when viewed from above. Gradually, due to the destruction of chloroplasts, the leaf develops a gray-yellow mottled appearance, loses turgor, dries out and crumbles, and in the final stages, the plant becomes covered with fine webbing.

No specific resistance genes that determine varietal resistance of cucumber to the mite have been identified in breeding. Research shows that the relative resistance of cultivars is linked to morpho-anatomical features, such as trichome density on the leaf surface, as well as to the biochemical composition of the tissues.
