Pests
Glycine max (L.) Merr.
A serious sucking pest that infests the undersides of soybean leaves, causing bronze discoloration, impaired photosynthesis, and reduced seed quality.
In the reference 6 varieties crop Soybean, where this is mentioned in the description.
The primary species infesting soybean is the two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae; Tetranychus atlanticus, Tetranychus turkestani, Mononychellus planki, and Polyphagotarsonemus latus are also encountered. Infestation of crops usually begins at field edges and spreads in localized patches.
The pest feeds on the underside of the leaf blade, causing small whitish spots ("stippling") on the upper leaf surface. As the infestation progresses, the spots coalesce, the leaf turns yellow-brown or "bronze," leading to premature leaf drop and the formation of shriveled seeds.
No commercially significant resistance genes to this pest have been identified in soybean; therefore, varietal resistance is considered a complex trait associated with plant morphophysiological characteristics, such as leaf pubescence density.
