Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety is of ancient folk origin and is genetically identical to the Italian variety Avanà. The plant has high vigor. Leaves are rounded, entire or three- to five-lobed. Bunches are medium to large, cylindrical in shape, and range from medium-density to compact. Berries are medium to large, oval, dark blue with a waxy bloom, and have thick skin and juicy pulp.

The variety is mid-season ripening. It is characterized by low winter hardiness (down to -18°C) and sensitivity to powdery mildew and erineum mite. Yield is productive but unstable, requiring medium pruning of the vine, as the fertility of the buds manifests from the 3rd or 4th position.

It is used primarily as a wine grape to create ruby-red colored wines with moderate color intensity and low alcohol content. In modern winemaking, it is encountered more often in blends with other local varieties than as a single-varietal wine.
