The variety is native to the Basque Country and has a genetic link to the Cabernet Franc variety. The plant is characterized by moderate vigor and hermaphroditic flowers. The variety is sensitive to late spring frosts and susceptible to powdery mildew; yields are rated as average or below average.
Bunches are medium-sized, cylindrical-conical or conical, with density varying from medium to dense. Berries are black, medium or small in size, round, with a thick waxy bloom, thick skin, and juicy pulp.
The main purpose of the variety is the production of red and rosé Txakoli wines, which are distinguished by soft tannins, medium strength, pronounced acidity, and fruit-herbaceous shades. The variety is also used in the production of sparkling wines to provide them with structure.
