The Portuguese variety Verdelho belongs to the Western European group. The vines have weak vigor. Leaves are medium-sized, rounded, 3- or 5-lobed, and slightly dissected. Clusters are small to medium-sized (90–110 g), broad-conical, often winged, and medium-dense or loose. Berries are oval, greenish-yellow, with thin skin and juicy, sweet flesh. The growing season is 150–170 days.
The variety has low susceptibility to downy mildew and gray mold, but is highly susceptible to powdery mildew. It is resistant to the European grapevine moth, but can be damaged by spider mites. It is used for the production of high-quality wines.
The Italian variety Verdello from Umbria is a distinct plant used in white wine blends. It is characterized by small or medium clusters and small, greenish-yellow berries. The variety is productive but susceptible to downy mildew and Botrytis.
