The variety belongs to the species Vitis vinifera L. and is intended exclusively for wine production. In official registries, it appears under the code Verdial Tinto T, where the letter "T" denotes the type (Tinto — red, wine variety). Genetic studies in 2020 confirmed the origin of the variety from a cross of the varieties Marufo and Malvasia Fina.
The plant is grown in limited quantities in the central and northern regions of Portugal. The variety is known by the synonyms Verdial Douro and Verdial Roxo. In specialized catalogs, it is often highlighted as a separate entry, despite possible discussions regarding a connection with the varieties Feijao or Verdelho Tinto.
