Verdelho Roxo R represents a color mutation of the classic white Verdelho variety. Genetic studies confirm that this variety is a unique genotype and is not identical to other varieties, such as Verdelho Tinto.

The agronomic characteristics of the mutation largely inherit the traits of the parent variety. The base variety Verdelho is characterized by early ripening, drought tolerance, susceptibility to Botrytis and coulure, as well as moderate susceptibility to downy mildew and powdery mildew.

The variety has wine-grape status and is officially included in the national catalogs of grape varieties of Portugal. It is used in various regions of the country, including Tejo and the Azores, in traditional blends for wine production.
