The variety is of French origin from the Bordeaux region. It is a wine grape variety that is cultivated in various regions in Portugal, including the Vinho Verde zone. The variety belongs to the early to mid-season maturity groups.

The plant is sensitive to mites and black rot. Due to the thin skin of the berries, the variety has a very high susceptibility to grey mold, which under certain climatic conditions facilitates the development of so-called noble rot used for creating dessert wines.

In Portuguese practice, the grapes are traditionally grown on various supports, including high trellises, pergolas, and trees. Semilão is not a separate breeding variety but is a local designation for the internationally recognized Sémillon variety.
