The name Semilão B is used in official catalogues and viticulture documents in Portugal and the EU as the official designation for the Colombard variety. Databases, including the Vitis International Variety Catalogue, clearly distinguish between Semilão, identified as Colombard, and the Semillon variety.

A white technical grape variety of French origin used in winemaking. In a number of Portuguese reference books, the Semilão variety, in the sense of Colombard, is classified as a low-quality variety, which is due to its role in the traditional winemaking of certain regions, for example, Vinho Verde.
