For container cultivation of cherry laurel, compact and dwarf cultivars such as Otto Luyken, Schipkaensis, and Genolia are preferred, as they are adapted to limited substrate volumes. The plant is extremely sensitive to moisture fluctuations; drying out of the soil is unacceptable, as is water stagnation, which triggers root rot. Due to limited nutrient supply and root system development, repotting into a larger container is required every two to three years to prevent root circling.
