Forage use of pea

Pisum sativum L.

The forage use of pea is based on its high protein concentration, including lysine, and the possibility of processing all parts of the plant into hay, silage, or grass meal.

In the reference 338 varieties crop Pea, where this is mentioned in the description.

Forage pea exceeds cereal crops in protein content by 2–3 times. Unlike vegetable varieties, the pods of forage forms have a pronounced parchment layer, which makes them unsuitable for consumption together with the pod walls. Both grain and green mass are used for forage production, with preference often given to leafy morphotypes capable of forming a large mowing mass, as well as to specialized field pea — pelushka.

In agricultural practice, to increase productivity and silage quality, mixed sowings of pea with oats, barley, or cruciferous crops are implemented. Breeding of varieties for forage purposes is focused on stable nutrient content, resistance to lodging, and shattering for mechanized harvesting. When using such forage, the need to neutralize anti-nutritional factors, such as trypsin inhibitors, is taken into account.
