Diseases
Hordeum vulgare L.
A complex of diseases caused by soil-borne fungi that affect the root system and the stem base of barley. It leads to sparse emergence, reduced tillering, the appearance of white heads, and significant yield losses.
In the reference 35 varieties crop Barley, where this is mentioned in the description.
The main forms of barley root rot are classified according to the etiology of the pathogens. Helminthosporium root rot is caused by the fungus Bipolaris sorokiniana, while Fusarium root rot is caused by a complex of species of the genus Fusarium, among which F. culmorum, F. avenaceum, F. oxysporum, and F. graminearum predominate. Ophiobolus and Pythium root rots also occur, with Gaeumannomyces graminis and Pythium species as their respective pathogens.
Symptoms of infection appear at all stages of plant development. In seedlings, browning and necrosis of the coleoptile, primary and secondary roots, and the tillering node are observed, which often leads to seedling death. In adult plants, wilting of the lower leaves, stunted growth, and darkening of the subcrown internode are noted. During the ripening period, characteristic signs include white heads and shriveled grain, and under high humidity, the formation of fungal mycelium of various colors may occur on the affected tissues.
