Rice tillering

Rice tillering is the plant's ability to produce lateral shoots and is a determining factor in crop structure. The key productivity indicator is the number of stems that form fully developed panicles with grain.

In rice agronomy, a distinction is made between total tillering, which includes all stems, and productive tillering, consisting only of shoots with panicles. For modern cultivars, characteristic productive tillering is 3–5 stems per plant, with values of 3.6–4.0 being considered indicative of well-tillering forms.

Productive tillering directly influences yield and adaptation to plant density, where achieving 350–450 productive stems per 1 m² is considered optimal. Insufficient tillering limits yield potential, while excessive vegetative mass formation due to high nitrogen nutrition leads to non-productive tillering, which causes lodging and the development of rice blast.
