Variety traits
Triticum aestivum L.
Tillering in common wheat is the plant's ability to form side shoots from the tillering node and is a key element of the crop structure. The indicator is measured by the number of stems per plant, divided into total and productive tillering.
In the reference 76 varieties crop Bread wheat, where this is mentioned in the description.
To assess the productivity of common wheat, the productive tillering coefficient is used, which reflects the number of stems that have formed a full-fledged ear. Under standard agrotechnical conditions for modern winter common wheat varieties, 2–3 shoots are considered optimal, whereas in commercial fields, the indicator more often varies from 1.5 to 2.5.
The degree of tillering directly depends on environmental conditions and plant stand density, with an inverse relationship existing between seeding density and tillering. The biological potential of the crop allows for the formation of a significantly larger number of shoots, but in field agrocenoses, excessive tillering is not desirable due to the risk of lodging, disease development, and reduced grain quality.
