Downy mildew of opium poppy

A dangerous disease of opium poppy caused by oomycetes of the genus Peronospora, affecting the aerial parts of the plant throughout the entire growing season.

The primary causal agent of the disease is the oomycete Peronospora arborescens (Berkeley) Caspari; species such as Peronospora somniferi, Peronospora meconopsidis, and Peronospora cristata are also encountered. The infection can affect plants from the seedling stage, causing deformation of stems and leaves and overall growth inhibition, which often leads to plant death before seed formation.

Yellowish, diffuse spots form on the upper surface of the leaf blade of infected plants. Under high humidity, a coating ranging in color from grayish to grayish-violet forms on the underside of the leaf. Severe development of the disease leads to premature drying of the vegetative mass and a significant reduction in seed yield.
