Variety traits

Tulip bulb

Tulipa L.

A key organ of the tulip, the parameters of which determine the quality of forcing, the marketability of cut flowers, and the propagation potential. It is evaluated by its circumference (grade), which determines the nutrient content for the formation of the flower stalk.

In the reference 185 varieties crop Tulip, where this is mentioned in the description.

In tulip agronomy, bulbs are classified by grade, which is determined by the circumference at the widest cross-section. According to GOST 28849-90, there are seven sizes, with an important indicator being the ratio of the smallest diameter to the largest, which must be at least 0.61 for the first grade and at least 0.66 for the second and third grades.

Bulb sizes directly affect productivity: Extra category (12+ cm) and 1st grade (11–12 cm) are considered optimal for professional forcing, while bulbs smaller than 10 cm are used for grow-out. During the dormancy period, the rudiments of the following year's organs are formed inside the bulb; therefore, mechanical damage or disruption of the storage conditions at a temperature of 17–20 °C can lead to bulb splitting, death of the sprout, or susceptibility to diseases.
