Variety traits
Tulipa L.
Double flowering in tulips is a varietal trait characterized by an increased number of perianth segments compared to the typical six petals, sometimes due to the transformation of stamens.
In the reference 375 varieties crop Tulip, where this is mentioned in the description.
In professional breeding and DUS testing, double flowering is assessed visually as a qualitative or semi-quantitative trait. In single tulips, the perianth consists of 6 segments, whereas in double cultivars, their number increases significantly, reaching 18–20 in fully double forms.
The expression of the trait directly affects agronomic practices: to maintain the stability of double flowering, cultivars require annual bulb lifting. The heavy blooms of double tulips are less resistant to weather conditions, which may cause plants to lodge after precipitation and necessitate staking.
