The degree of cold hardiness in hydrangeas is determined by the species: the most resilient are Hydrangea paniculata and Hydrangea arborescens, whose varieties are adapted to zones 3–4 and can withstand temperatures down to –32°C. Hydrangea macrophylla possesses lower resistance and, in most regions, requires mandatory covering to protect its flower buds.

When assessing this indicator, the blooming habit is taken into account: for species that form inflorescences on the previous year's growth, bud survival during the winter period is the key factor for flowering in the following season. Frost damage also depends on the success of shoot maturation during the growing season, the quality of snow cover, and resistance to late spring frosts.
